I have been in the web development Industry for the last 22 years.

During that time, I have built hundreds of web applications and managed the planning, development & release of million-dollar products. In fact, I have invested so many hours into mastering my craft that I started my web development agency and hired three offshore web developers at one point. (Closed during COVID-19)

But do you want to know a secret?

I actually use the same 5 techniques every time.

#1: Work breakdown structure

Here’s how it works:

• Break your work into smaller blocks (pieces)

• Now break those pieces into steps.

• This will result in tasks, sub-tasks, and milestones.

This simple activity allows you to identify your tasks, sub-tasks, and milestones.

#2: Data flow diagram

Here’s how it works:

• Create a high-level flow of how data is passed between a user device and the server database.

• For example, flow os user name & password from the login screen to the web server and return.

Data flow is crucial.

#3: Don’t be just a front-end or back-end developer

Here’s how it works:

• Ask colleagues to show what they do and how

• Get involved with architecture & database design. Ask your architects to go out for lunch with you.

• Learn about domains, hosting, web servers, etc.

Do these 3 things, and you’ll be wildly successful.

#4: Go beyond technology and avoid doing just web programming

Here’s how it works:

• Get involved with requirement gathering, client interaction, user acceptance, and training.

• This will increase your understanding of why that application was built and what solution it provides. It is humbling to know how your work impacts business.

Easy, right?

#5: Make friends

Here’s how it works:

• Work will always be there, so have fun while working.

• Make friends with your co-workers, product managers, Scrum Masters, Stakeholders and Clients.
